Variety of activities on the agenda this weekend in the Olympic Peninsula

A surf fundraiser, garden tour and Makah Museum anniversary are among the attractions on the Northern Olympic Peninsula this weekend.

• International Surfing Day will be celebrated at 6 p.m. today by the Olympic Peninsula Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation at Harbinger Winery at 2358 WUS Highway 101.

Admission at the door is $30 for adults and $20 for students. Children 7 and under are admitted free.

Tickets include dinner; a glass of wine, beer or soft drink; and a raffle ticket entry in the sweepstakes.

Little Devil’s Lunchbox will provide a taco bar and live music will be played by garage surf band, Antbath.

A silent, live auction will feature a one-of-a-kind surfboard shaped by Bauer Surfboards with artwork by Todd Fischer; a Todd Fischer painting, weekend getaways and island whale watching tours. A brand new Lib-Tech surfboard and snowboard, durable home and body products from Colibri and other prizes will be raffled off throughout the night.

• Port Townsend Film Festival PTFF Focus will host “Sweetheart,” a queer coming-of-age film, from 7-9 p.m. tonight to mark Pride Month in partnership with Olympic Pride and Jefferson County Transgender Support.

“The Celluloid Closet,” a film about LGBTQ visibility in cinema, premiered on Thursday.

• Visit to the garden of petals and paths will present six vegetable gardens on Saturday.

The self-guided tour will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Ticket holders can use the map printed on the ticket to visit all or part of the gardens in any order. Two are in Port Angeles and four are located along State Route 112 overlooking the Strait of Juan De Fuca.

Tickets are $15 in advance from local vendors and $20 on the day of the visit. They can be purchased up until the day of the visit at Over the Fence, Sunny Farms, and The Co-op Farm and Garden in Sequim; Port Book and News, Swain’s General Store, Airport Garden Center and Fiddleheads Home & Garden in Port Angeles; Arts and Antiquities at Joyce; and Forks Outfitters and Rusty Gate Nursery in Forks.

• Makah Museum at 1880 Bayview Ave. in Neah Bay will mark its 43rd anniversary with a talk at the Ozette Archaeological Site and a pop-up sale from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Alex “Swiftwater” McCarty, a Makah artist, will present a talk, “Ozette: A Gift from the Past,” at 1:00 p.m. in the Makah Museum Classroom.

Additionally, Makah’s Board of Trustees and cultural and research staff will pay tribute to Kirk Wachendorf, the Makah Museum’s retired interpretive specialist since its opening in 1979.

McCarty, a well-known artist, worked on the excavations of the Ozette archaeological site which began in 1970. Ancient longhouses had been buried in a landslide and perfectly preserved artifacts were kept at Neah Bay as permanent collection of the Makah Museum.

A sculptor, painter, printmaker, and teacher, he earned a bachelor’s degree in visual arts from Evergreen State College in 2000 and a master’s degree in teaching in 2002.

After earning his master’s degree, he taught art at Chief Leschi Schools.

• The urban sketches of Port Townsend will meet at the mast near the intersection of Washington and Benedict streets at 10 a.m.

The wharf has commercial boats and US Coast Guard vessels to draw as well as nearby buildings such as the Port Facilities, West Marine Store, Port Townsend Garden Center, Propolis Brewery, Pourhouse, Sea J’s Café and the Pane D’Amore bakery.

After drawing, the group will meet again at the mast at 12:15 p.m. to share their work and take a picture.

The event is open to all skill levels.

• 10th Sequim Valley Lions Club Crab Meal will be 2-6 p.m. Saturday at Pioneer Memorial Park, 387 E. Washington St.

Meals are $40, $30 for the half-crab dinner, which also includes corn, coleslaw, a bun, and soda or bottled water. Westside pizza, beer and wine will also be available. Live music will be performed by the Old Sidekicks and karaoke will be hosted by Lyle and Donna.

• Country and Western Hoedown at Fairwinds Winerywhich was recently postponed, was rescheduled from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday.

The hoedown at Fairwinds Winery, 1984 Hastings Ave., will feature Buck Ellard and his band from noon to 2 p.m. and include other live country music, plus food and drink.

• Now & Then: A photo story of the place called Port Townsend will be on view at the Jefferson Museum of Art & History, 540 Water St., Port Townsend for the final day of Sunday.

Throughout the 2022 school year, Port Townsend High School students in David Egeler’s Advanced Photography and Media courses selected historical images from the collections of the Jefferson County Historical Society and then found the location where photos were taken and worked to recreate the exact framing and angle of view. Nowadays.

The resulting photo essays visually illustrate some of the continuing evolution of Port Townsend.

• Anthropocene by Karen Lené Rudd will continue to be on display at the Jefferson Museum of Art & History until September 18.

• The Book of Will continues at 7:30 p.m. tonight and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at the Olympic Theater Arts at 414 N. Sequim Ave. in Sequim.
