Hundreds of people in Swindon enjoyed today’s warm sunny weather ahead of the unusually high temperatures expected in the coming days.
Freezers at Aldi’s Drove Road store ran out of ice cubes and frozen goods today as people brace for soaring temperatures expected to peak at 39 degrees on Monday.
Temperatures hit a milder 26 degrees today so families had fun in the parks. In the city gardens, the ice cream stand is packed and, around the parks, people are hydrating with water.
A man was spotted running despite the sunny weather.
Swindon’s orange warning for heat comes into effect tomorrow (Sunday) and lasts until Tuesday.
The Met Office says the impacts on people’s health and infrastructure will be “widespread”.
He added: “Adverse population-wide health effects are likely to be experienced, not limited to those most vulnerable to extreme heat, leading to potential serious illness or danger to life.
“Government advice is that 999 services should only be used in an emergency; seek advice from 111 if you need non-emergency health advice.”
In other parts of the country, a red warning was issued for the first time, so a national emergency was declared.
