Doha: United Development Company (UDC), a leading Qatari public company and the master developer of the Pearl and Gewan Islands, celebrated “Qatar Sustainable Development Week” (QSW) with a series of community events aimed at creating environmental awareness at The Pearl Island.
Qatar Sustainability Week is a national campaign to encourage people to lead more sustainable lives and create a movement for change by raising awareness of the impact of climate change, while emphasizing that sustainability in Qatar is a responsibility.
Pearl Island’s weekend activities included the inauguration of the island’s first community garden in collaboration with Hadiqaa Middle East, which aims to educate community members on the importance of biodiversity and sustainability, to to create more green spaces in Qatar and to provide a sustainable way of life for the inhabitants of the island.
The event also engaged residents and their families in several environmental and educational activities. In this context, the UDC had announced an initiative, the first of its kind in Qatar and the Middle East, to plant a tree for each new employee of the UDC with the aim of sequestering employees’ carbon dioxide emissions. and to reduce the environmental footprint of UDC’s operations. This is in addition to the 160 trees that have been planted as part of the existing cooperation between the UDC and the Green Organization, in addition to the 7,700 trees currently existing around The Pearl Island, which offset nearly 197 tons of carbon dioxide. carbon.
