Teacher Needs Social, Emotional and Mental Health Garden Supplies

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) – Every day, students and teachers at Harbor View Elementary School can be found outside tending to one of the school’s seven raised garden beds.

Jordan Adams not only plays a role in garden maintenance, but is also part of the school’s support staff.

She says her students love to garden and that the simple act of watering plants, picking weeds or composting plays an important role in their social and emotional well-being.

She says the garden also contributes to the physical well-being and academic progress of her students.

Adams says flipping the floor immediately calms students down when they’re struggling to get over big emotions.

“We’re going to go out and get some fresh air and pick some mint and come back and talk about any issues they’re having, and then they’ll be ready to start learning again,” Adams said.

Adams says the school beds contain a variety of vegetables like celery, broccoli, cucumbers, herbs, pollinating flowers and even sensory plants like lamb’s ear that are soothing to the touch.

For his Donors Choose project, Adams is asking for compost, a raised bed, children’s gardening gloves, and a compost bin and composter.

“It’s a way for me to connect with the kids and for them to connect with each other. It will be fun to have new things to incorporate into the garden and get the kids excited,” Adams said.
