HALF-TERM is in full swing – and that means kids have to have fun.

Parents spend an average of £323 during the break, according to Equifax.

If your budget is tight, here are some inexpensive ways to entertain the youngsters.

MOMENTS OF SILENCE: Printactivities.com has many free summer-themed sets to download and print at home for kids who love coloring or puzzles.

PASTRY SHOP: Encourage budding bakers with the three-ingredient cookie recipe on delish.com.

You need 70g of sugar, 120g of flour and 100g of butter (which you may already have) to make 12 cookies. Including cooking time, they should take 30-40 minutes.

Alternatively, kids will love the Dr Oetker Solar System Cupcake Kit, £2.50 at Tesco. Or get Asda’s Unicorn Cookie Kit for £1.75.

ANIMAL MAGIC: Making bird feeders is a great inexpensive activity for kids. Slice the apples then dip them in Aldi Grandessa peanut butter, 99p, then sunflower seeds, £1.10 at Sainsbury’s. Tie them with twine to a tree branch in the garden.

DEVELOP YOUR OWN: Use an old yogurt pot and add a damp cotton ball. Sprinkle with a few Wilko watercress seeds, 45p, and place on a windowsill.

Children can add a little water daily and the watercress should sprout in just a day or two.

TREASURE HUNT: This requires a little more work from the parents but also takes a little time.

Hide something in the house and draw a pirate-style treasure map to follow.

Use written clues or draw pictures to point them in the right direction, either around the house or at a local park.

CROWN IT: Hobbycraft is running Jubilee wreath making workshops in stores for £5.

To avoid this expense, gather some paper or old greeting cards and make your own wreath using tape and scissors. Add stickers for decoration.

My best advice is to measure around their head first with a piece of string to create a crown that fits them.

CHALLENGE THEM: Set the kids a daily challenge throughout midterm. It could be the number of steps they take, star jumps, or picking up toys from the floor.

Making household chores fun could be good for you too!
