A SCHOOL band is ready to support one of their musical heroes tonight.
Radical Steps, a school group from Queen Elizabeth School in Kirkby Lonsdale, will perform at the Brewery Arts Center in Kendal on Wednesday April 20 from 6.45pm in support of Roberto Fonseca.
The group, fans of the Cuban pianist, will play for free in the garden of the Brewery Arts Center.
“After listening to loads of pianists, I think Roberto Fonseca stands out, with different things every bar,” said Gabriel Weber, 17, who plays drums in the band.
After hearing how much the school orchestra was influenced by Roberto Fonseca, their teacher and mentor, Mr. David Banfield, contacted Brewery Arts to help organize the show.
“The opportunity for them to play in a venue that isn’t the school hall, and give the band performance exposure, especially post-lockdown, is super exciting,” Mr Banfield said.
“It was amazing to hear that a Grammy nominated musician was playing in Kendal so I got tickets to see him and then a few weeks later wondered if it was possible to involve the group and I made contact with there.”
Radical Steps is made up of 12 students aged 11 to 18 who will play a variety of songs including three composed entirely by the band.
“It’s awesome and a lot of fun, I love the instruments I play,” said Gabriel Clark, who at 12 is one of the youngest members.
