LAKEWOOD, Ohio – They did it again.
Residents of McKinley Place in Lakewood conducted their annual drive for Lakewood Community Services and collected a large amount of school supplies as requested by LCS. This is the sixth year that the neighbors have hosted the collection. In previous years, LCS has asked for children’s toiletries, coffee, and cereal, but the past two years they have asked for donations of school supplies.
“We have such a big community here. At Christmas we collected winter clothes for Afghan refugees and a few months ago we collected items requested for Ukraine,” said Madeline Hayes. She said neighbors pick up many items each time.
Hayes said the final tally for this year’s school supply drive was: 217 glue sticks; records, 151; erasers, 145; notebooks, 76; post-its, 64; boxes of pencils, 56; scissors, 50; pencil cases, 41; colored pencil cases, 37; leaders, 31; packs of marker pens, 24; glue bottles, 23; highlighter packs, 17; lined paper packets, 14; filing cabinets, 13; pencil cases, 13; pencil sharpeners, 12; Sharpie pen packs, 12; packs of dry erase markers, 12; packs of cards, 12; large packets of wipes, 11; boxes of school supplies, new.
Congratulations to these civic-minded Lakewoodites.
Weekend entertainment: Looking for something to do this weekend? Stop by North Olmsted Park August 25-28 and enjoy North Olmsted Homecoming activities. Presented by the North Olmsted Community Council, things start at 6 p.m. on August 25 with the Homecoming Car Show, held in conjunction with Xtreme Performance Complete Car Care.
The entry fee is $5. There will be scoreboard plaques, entertainment, concessions and a public choice judging.
Registration for the show closes at 6 p.m. Enter West Park Drive and follow the signs. The cars will be displayed midway for spectators to walk around and see the entrances.
Proceeds will go to the North Olmsted High School Scholarship Fund.

Gastronomy Festival: Bring your appetite to Fairview Park during the month of September and sample the food available at restaurants around town. The Coalition for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion sponsors the Fairview Park Food Fest to encourage residents to visit local restaurants and try their cuisine.
Print the registration form, visit and order from one location in each category – Pizza, Central/South American, Asian, Sweet/Candy, Bar/Grill, and European/Middle Eastern – and submit a photo of the ticked list to dei@fairviewpark.org by September 30. Scholarship winners: Congratulations to the 10 local women who were selected for scholarships this year by College Club West.
Two scholarships were awarded to women pursuing graduate studies in education. Sherry Morgan from Cleveland is enrolled in an online Master of Science in Education program at Fort Hays State University, Kansas. Abigail Nixon of Olmsted Township is pursuing a Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Akron.
Of the eight additional scholarships, six were awarded to women pursuing degrees at Cleveland State University: Jeannette Abifadel, Strongsville, and Malika Kidd, Warrensville Heights, MBA; Elizabeth Stiles, Cleveland, Masters in Public Administration; Kelly Green, Parma, Bachelor of Social Work; Megan Lannen Neet, Cleveland, masters in clinical mental health and counseling; Bridget Schuster, Lakewood, juris doctor, Cleveland-Marshall College of Law.
Scholarships have also been awarded to Caitlin Rader, Lakewood, who is following the Ohio University Osteopathic Medicine program, and Melissa Arcuri, Broadview Heights, who is pursuing a Masters in Library and Library Science. information at Kent State University.
Since 1971, College Club West has provided annual scholarships to women 25 years of age or older who are enrolled in a four-year degree or graduate program. This year’s grants totaled $31,000.
College Club West is a non-profit service organization founded in 1926 that supports women’s education through its scholarships. Comprised of 35 interest groups, the association provides its 200 members with opportunities for lifelong learning, social engagement and community engagement. Membership is open to women living in the western suburbs who have earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or who are registered nurses.

Calling all artists: The Town of Lakewood, LakewoodAlive and Cuyahoga County invite interested artists to submit their qualifications to create a new piece of public art will be located in the Winterhurst Arena building, 14740 Lakewood Heights Blvd., Lakewood. Registrations are due before 4 p.m. on September 8.
The proposed art will be affixed to the south-east facade of Winterhurst Arena, the municipal ice rink. The nature of the concept will be at the discretion of the artist. If a mural is proposed, it will be printed, cut and installed on the brick veneer by a printing company retained by the city and LakewoodAlive.
The selected artist will receive a $2,500 stipend for their work in the final
art development. Materials and installation up to $9,000 will be covered by the
Departmental subsidy.

Free meal: Clague Road United Church of Christ and Westlake Church of the Redeemer will have their free monthly takeout meal starting at 4:30 p.m. on August 27 at Clague Road UCC, 3650 Clague Rd., North Olmsted.
All are invited to stop. Meals will be available until supplies run out. Drive to the back of the church and masked and gloved volunteers will bring dinner to your car.
One more gig: Due to rain, the Lakewood Park Concert Series will have another event at 6:30 p.m. on August 28 at the Lakewood Park Bandstand. The Hillcrest Concert Band will perform.
Bring a blanket or lawn chairs and enjoy the last concert of the season.
Market time: The Frostville Museum Summer Farmers’ Market and Sale of Trash and Treasures continues from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on August 27 at the Frostville Museum Complex, 24101 Cedar Point Road, North Olmsted, Cleveland’s Rocky River Preserve Metroparks.
The market features local farmers, seasonal produce, free range meats, pastries, eggs, honey, maple syrup, tea and coffee, artisan breads, garden plants and more .

Back to School Event: The Lakewood Back to School Bike Rodeo will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on August 28 at Madison Park in the south parking lot.
