KDHE
TOPEKA – The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is holding public meetings to help communities and public water systems learn about new revisions to Environmental’s lead and copper rules Protection Agency. Under the LCRR, public water systems are required to prepare and maintain an inventory of service line materials. This inventory must be submitted to the KDHE before October 16, 2024.
Public water system decision makers, operators and the public are encouraged to learn about inventory requirements and steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of exposure to lead in drinking water. Pipes containing lead can become a potential health hazard in drinking water. Some homes (usually built before 1988) may have lead service lines that connect to the public water supply system. Young children, infants and fetuses are particularly vulnerable to lead in drinking water and water used for formula because the physical and behavioral effects of lead occur at lower levels of exposure in children.
KDHE staff will consider the following topics:
- Development of lead service line inventories Public water supply system responsibilities Cooperation with water system customers
