Volunteer employees of the Lower Colorado River Authority dug and helped out in several Highland Lakes communities on Friday, April 1, during LCRA’s Steps Forward Day, an annual day of service.

Volunteers from the Pedernales Electric Cooperative and staff from the town of Burnet stepped in to help with several projects. In total, more than 550 LCRA employees have volunteered on nearly three dozen projects in 31 communities.

“It’s a day when we take a step forward to give back to our customers’ communities, and this year we have projects in more communities than ever before,” LCRA chief executive Phil Wilson said in a statement. Press release. “It’s a great day for us to come together and have fun, work hard and support our communities.”

Volunteers tackled six projects in Burnet and Llano counties:

  • painting metal fence posts at the Galloway-Hammond Park ball diamonds in Burnet;
  • plant more than two dozen trees in Aspen and Noah Thompson parks in Cottonwood Shores;
  • replanting a drought-tolerant garden and creating a new pollinator garden at Horseshoe Bay Town Hall;
  • cleaning flower beds and mulching the playground at the Boys & Girls Club of the Highland Lakes-Marble Falls unit;
  • cleaning of landscaping at the entrance to Llano Municipal Airport;
  • and adding plants and mulch at Lakeside Park and laying sod at Johnson Park in Marble Falls.

PEC volunteers joined people from the LCRA to help with the Cottonwood Shores and Marble Falls projects, while staff from the Town of Burnet assisted with the Burnet sites.

The LCRA launched Steps Forward Day in 2015 and has held it every year since, except in 2020, when the pandemic forced its cancellation. LCRA works with its customers to identify service projects in their communities and provides the labor and materials needed to complete these tasks.
