Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano II at Croke Park took one step closer to becoming a reality.
In a word
At Monday’s monthly meeting of Dublin City Council, a number of councilors offered their support to Croke Park in staging the rematch between Taylor and Serrano.
Christy Burke and Nial Ring, both former mayors of Dublin, have tabled a motion for the Central Area Committee, as well as an emergency motion, according to the Irish Mirror. October has been discussed as the most likely date for the rematch.
“Everyone wants this fight to continue in Croke Park to recognize what great sports stars and role models these women are,” Cllr Burke said, via the Mirror. “Not only is this a wonderful opportunity for them, but for the whole country to be showcased on the world stage.
“It is now up to the developers and management of Croke Park to work out the finer details of money and costs.”
What Taylor Said
Reflecting on her split decision win over Serrano – a win Taylor described as the biggest experience of her career – the boxer from Bray made clear her desire to finally fight in Ireland as a professional.
“A rematch would be awesome. I’m up for any challenge, I want to fight the best out there,” Taylor told DAZN over the weekend.
“I would absolutely love to fight in Ireland. A big fight in Croke Park with 80,000 people. That would probably be the only thing that could top what happened last week (in Madison Square Garden).
“Imagine filling 80,000 seats. It would be very, very special. It would also be an easy sell, I think.”
