With Easter weekend upon us, there’s no better way to brighten up your dining table than with a beautiful bouquet of flowers. If you hope your bouquet will bloom for as long as possible, there are steps you can take.
Remove all the leaves
Next, Imperfect Foods advises, “Cut off any leaves that are below the waterline.
However, Grower Direct experts recommend leaving some of the leaves down the length of the stem.
This is because flowers need leaves as part of their hydration process.
They add: “Always be ‘gentle’ when removing leaves, nicks or breaks in the surface of the stem are ‘open wounds’ for bacteria to enter.”
Add sparkling water to your vase
Imperfect Foods recommends pouring sparkling water into the vase with plain water.
Unflavored sparkling water has many benefits for plants and may even help them grow faster.
According to Science.com, carbonated water acts like “supercharged water.”
The website states, “Club soda and other unsweetened carbonated beverages, such as mineral water, contain a host of nutrients essential for plant growth. These include carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulfur and sodium.
Cut the stems every few days and refresh the water
To keep your flowers fresher, Imperfect Fruits recommends pruning your flower stems every few days and refreshing the water.
Stems should be cut at an angle each time they are pruned, and adding a little extra soda water can give your flowers an extra boost.
