Knowing how to clean a Dyson vacuum can get your trusted vacuum back up and running in no time, not to mention it can help extend its life. As with most cleaning devices, such as the best washing machines and the best dishwashers, it’s easy to forget that these machines sometimes need a little TLC. the best vacuum cleaners are no exception.

If you don’t take the time to clean your Dyson, you will notice the effect on its performance. Sucking and general picking up will start to slow down. Your vacuum cleaner may also be struggling to ventilate, causing it to make a strange noise or even shut off completely.

Don’t worry, though, here we’ll outline exactly what you need to do to clean your Dyson vacuum, whether you have a stick, cylinder or upright model.

How to clean a Dyson vacuum

What you’ll need to clean a Dyson vacuum

• Microfiber cloth
• Dish soap
• Distilled white vinegar (optional)
• Scissors

1. Unplug the appliance — First safety point, make sure you have unplugged the device if necessary.

2. Empty the cartridge — Remove the dust bin as you normally would once it’s full and empty out any leftovers. Dyson vacuums are all bagless, so do it outside if possible to avoid allergies and a mess. Be sure to shake the cartridge well and clear any visible blockages.

Most cordless model cartridges can be released using a red trigger/button near the handle, but refer to your manual if you are unsure.

3. Wash and clean the container — You can now clean the inside of the cartridge using a damp microfiber cloth. Do not immerse cartridge in water or use detergent or cleaning chemicals. You can, however, use compressed air to reach the troublesome crevices, but be sure to do this outdoors.

4. Remove the filter — While the cartridge is drying, it’s time to tackle the filter. Your vacuum cleaner filter is an important component – it essentially captures all large particles, such as dust and pollen, and contains them in your vacuum to protect the motor and prevent them from being released into the air. With regular use, this filter will inevitably become covered and clogged with dust and will need to be cleaned.

The filter is usually on the end closest to the handle if you’re using a cordless model. If you have a vertical model there is usually one on top of the cartridge and sometimes a second in the ball of the floor head – both will need cleaning. The filter of a cartridge model is in the top of the dustbin. If you are unsure, refer to your manual.

5. Wash the filter and let it dry — Once separated, carefully take the filter outside and remove any immediate dust above a trash can you can tap it gently to loosen the majority. Once you’ve done this, take the filter back inside and rinse it under cold running water, rubbing it gently by hand to remove any final dust.

Now fill it with lukewarm water, cover the openings with your hands and give it a gentle shake to give it a final rinse. Pour in the water and repeat until the water runs clear. Then shake the filter to remove the excess and allow to air dry for at least 24 hours. Make sure the filter is completely dry before replacing it.

6. Untangle the Brush Roll — Now is the time to take care of the long hairs that have wrapped around the brush roll. Take a pair of scissors (ideally manicure scissors) and cut along the bar to remove them. Be sure not to pull or force the bristles as this may damage the vacuum. Be careful not to damage the bristles when you cut either.

On some Dyson vacuums you may need to remove the soleplate to access the brush roll. You can do this using a flathead screwdriver or a coin. Just be sure to keep the screws secure while you wait. You should use a damp microfiber cloth to clean the brush roll compartment while you’re here.

7. Check if the pipe is clogged — If your Dyson vacuum suddenly stopped playing ball, you may be dealing with a blockage. Remove the hose and inspect it to see if this is the case. If you have something long and thin, like a mop handle, you can push it to clear a blockage.

Alternatively, you can soak the hose for 10 minutes in lukewarm water mixed with distilled white vinegar before rinsing. This should dislodge the blockage. Let it dry completely.

If you have a stick vacuum, it’s also worth checking the hole between the canister and the hose to make sure it’s not clogged.

8. Clean the accessories — Don’t forget to review your attachments as well. If you often use your crevice tool or your mini motorized tool, then you will have to watch them.

Remove trapped dust and hair from tools immediately, either by hand or as you did with the main brush. Then wipe the accessories with a damp microfiber cloth.

9. Wipe the exterior — Finally, wipe down the outside of your Dyson vacuum with a damp microfiber cloth.

10. Let everything dry then reassemble — Let it dry for at least 24 hours before reassembling it.

Voila, your Dyson vacuum should be ready to go again. Remember to keep an eye on its maintenance over time.

How often should I clean my Dyson vacuum?

The filter should be cleaned once a month as a guide, but it depends on how often you use your vacuum cleaner. Some of the more advanced Dyson stick vacuums even contain sensors that will let you know when it’s time to clean the filter via the display.

The rest of the Dyson vacuum should be cleaned as needed. Be sure to empty the canister as soon as it is full so that it does not form a blockage. If you notice your vacuum stopping working even though the canister is empty, that’s another sign it needs cleaning.
