Henrico County 4-H Youth Development is accepting applications for three new special interest clubs that will encourage youth to have fun while exploring agriculture, animal science and cake decorating.

SPIN clubs – Digging Science; Legs, claws and hooves; and Piece of Cake – are launched in conjunction with National 4-H Week (October 2-8). Henrico 4-H will showcase clubs, camps and other opportunities at an open house from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 5 in the demonstration kitchen of the Human Services Building, 8600 Dixon Powers Drive.

Digging Science, for ages 5-11, will explore topics such as animal science, the farm-to-table movement, zoology, gardening and environmentalism. The free club will generally meet from 5:30-6:30 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month at various locations within the Henrico County Public Library. The first meeting will be Thursday, October 20 at the Glen Allen Branch Library, 10501 Staples Mill Road. Due to the limited number of places, registration will be done monthly online.

Paws, Claws, & Hooves, for ages 9-13, will focus on animal science and provide hands-on experiences through a variety of interactions with live animals. Led by two licensed veterinary technicians, the free club will meet from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on the second Thursday of the month, beginning November 10, at the Hunton Recreation Center, 11690 Old Washington Highway. Registration is accepted online.

Piece of Cake, for ages 12-18, will teach participants how to make frosting for cakes and cookies using a variety of styles and techniques, including borders, flowers, leaves and lettering. Participants will also explore entrepreneurship, career development and financial management. The club will meet from 6 to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays, beginning October 19, at the Twin Hickory Recreation Building, 5011 Twin Hickory Road. The club’s $20 fee covers the cost of a cake decorating kit. Registration is accepted online.

Our cover is free – but we need your help to provide it

You may notice that you did not have to pay to read this article. This is because we have never set up a paywall in our 21 years of existence. We believe that access to reliable and fair local media coverage is a basic human right, and we are committed to keeping all of our coverage free for everyone to consume.

This access is important because it helps readers connect with their community, helps them learn more about what’s going on around them (good and bad), fosters community conversations, and prompts meaningful action. Over 70,000 people read our coverage each month, and we believe our community is better off for it.

But as a small business, simply giving our “product” to everyone for free is not a sustainable business model. That’s why every voluntary contribution we receive, no matter how big or small, is critically important.

We know that not everyone can or wants to financially support our work. But if you can do it, we need you. Invest in our trusted local journalism today so thousands more in our community can benefit.
