Earth Water Month kicks off March 22 with activities for all ages – Parksville Qualicum Beach News

The Regional District of Nanaimo announced that it is pleased to work with its regional partners to host the sixth annual Earth to Water Month.

This year’s themes are groundwater and climate change. World Water Day begins the month on March 22 and Earth Day ends on April 22.

The extreme heat, wildfires and floods in British Columbia have raised more awareness about climate change and the impacts we are seeing in our own backyards. How we can mitigate and adapt to these impacts is the focus of Water to Earth Month events that residents can participate in.

“Earth Water Month is a fun and hands-on way for residents of all ages to learn about the environment and how we can all help protect it through simple changes and small actions,” said RDN President Tyler Brown.

Residents are encouraged to participate by registering for one of the scheduled events, visiting the RDN WaterSmart team. page for online activities and following the RDN on social networks for fun contests. Activities throughout the month include:

• Workshops on WaterSmart gardening, stormwater management and natural landscaping for climate change resilience.

• An educational walk with a local biologist and water specialist along the Nanaimo River to discuss water protection and shoreline stewardship.

• A “Bio-Blitz” in your own backyard by following the plants and animals you see.

• Organize an invasive plant removal and litter cleanup party, or organize one for your own community.

• Online contests where you can share how you are making a difference to conserve water or reduce the impacts of climate change on RDN’s social media channels for a chance to win great prize packages.
