October 24 (Reuters)West Indies head coach Phil Simmons has resigned after the team’s T20 World Cup exit in Australia, Cricket West Indies announced on Monday.

Twice West Indies champions suffered a surprise elimination by Ireland with nine wickets beating in Hobart on Friday, ending the bottom of Group B with two points.

“I recognize that it’s not just the team that suffers, but also the proud nations we represent,” Simmons said.

“It’s disappointing and heartbreaking but we just didn’t show up. We weren’t good enough and now we have to watch a tournament unfold without our involvement. It’s unfathomable and for that I apologize. deeply with our fans and subscribers.”

The West Indies made their first exit from the world showpiece since the inaugural 2007 tournament in South Africa.

Simmons led the West Indies to their second T20 World Cup title in 2016, beating England at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
