HOLLYWOOD, FL. (WSVN) – A South Florida elementary school has honored the lasting legacy of an alumnus with a special project.
Students and teachers at Orange Brook Elementary School in Hollywood came together to create a community garden with supplies generously donated by Amazon.
This was done to honor Oliver, an 8 year old boy who was their first student with autism. He died in 2017.
Oliver loved planting and learning about the environment through the garden, which is why the moments that will be shared are so special for many people.
Now the school strives to keep his memory alive as he enjoyed spending time in the garden.
“We loved him to death, and when we lost him it was tragic not just for his family but for the whole family at our school,” Principal Devon O’Neal said, “and we felt that we wanted to do something in memory of Oliver, so the garden is a stopover.
“We get a rotating schedule to keep the garden well maintained at all times, throughout the summer as well,” said fourth-grade teacher Nancy Delucai.
Garden maintenance has taken its toll during the pandemic, but the school hopes Amazon’s donation can restore it to its former glory.
